MARTINIQUE: The greatest

2012

Several colonizations, hurricanes, slave abuse, excessive industrial pollution and volcanic eruptions that caused thousands of deaths not so long ago. These are some of the events this indefatigable island has gone through in its long history. A Caribbean paradise conquered by Christopher Colombus, it was also Napoleon’s wife favorite island, Joséphine de Beauharnais, nowadays still hated for supporting slavery. Nevertheless, the unshakeable island, whose beauty makes it so firm, is so full of life that it really is magnificent.

Mount Pelée, an active 1,397 m active volcano, and the jungle forest around provide an exotic touch to the island, perfect for a relaxing week. Hiking Mount Pelée’s paths to the summit is one of the hardest things I have done in many years, but the views to the Caribbean Sea and the nearby islands are really worth the climb. Black sand beaches in the north, white sand beaches in the south, coves, hot springs, reefs, rain forests, and mountains are endless wonders that make this little piece of soil a place of great strength.

MARTINICA: La magnífica

2012
